Two-plus years into the pandemic, it’s apparent that those serendipitous moments of making friends with a coworker over snacks in the office kitchen have all but disappeared. Most people haven’t met those they work with face to face, indicates a study from Green Building Elements(Opens in a new window).
The survey of over 4,000 people who started new jobs since COVID-19 arrived found that they’ve mostly interacted with their new coworkers over Zoom (41%), Teams (35%), Slack (10%), WhatsApp (8%), and Skype (6%). Some socializing still takes place, though: 22% said they have non-work video calls with their coworkers regularly. And online social events are organized by employers for 41% of those surveyed.
One standout stat from the survey is that 55% of respondents have never met their new coworkers in person. Green Buildings Elements broke down the numbers state by state, which you can check in the interactive map below. If you’re looking for the states with the highest number of people who’ve never set eyes on the people they work with every day, those are Nebraska (89%), Washington (81%), Pennsylvania (79%), Oklahoma (73%), and Arizona (73%). The smallest numbers were found in Nevada (33%), Wyoming (25%), Hawaii (25%), Montana (17%), and Kentucky (17%).
