Our Flag Means Death completely avoids the true story of the real Calico Jack in crafting its own version of the legendary pirate captain. This proves to be to the show's benefit, as the episode «We Gull Way Back» represents a major shift in the series' style. While the early episodes were largely concerned with world-building and stayed relatively true to the historical record of the real pirates portrayed in the show, the humor of «We Gull Way Back» is more focused on the characters and their interactions than simple anachronistic gags.
Our Flag Means Death episode 8, «We Gull Way Back,» introduces the character of Calico Jack (Will Arnett) into the series' colorful cast of characters. An old friend of Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) who claims to be the victim of a recent mutiny, the wild and free-spirited Calico Jack quickly comes to take control of the Revenge, as he reminiscences with Blackbeard about better days when he was still a Captain with a ship of his own. While the Revenge's crew is charmed by Calico Jack's stories at first, they grow less enthused as Jack begins suggesting increasingly dangerous games to pass the time. Calico Jack also immediately winds up on the wrong side of Captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) who sees Jack as a threat to both his command of the Revenge's crew and, more importantly, his relationship with Blackbeard.
