A modder is working on a total conversion mod for the original Far Cry game that will act as the direct sequel many players have been waiting for. With later entries in the Far Cry franchises like 2021's Far Cry 6 focusing on new locations and protagonists, the series is arguably now very different to what it once was.
When Far Cry released in 2004 it was praised for its fast-paced gameplay mechanics, challenging AI enemies, graphics that were groundbreaking for the time, and the variety of exploration options in its open-world location. Many of these gameplay features have gone on to be mainstays of the franchise in Ubisoft's sequels, however, each entry now serves as its own entity, rather than being a direct sequel. The first Far Cry focused on Jack Carver, an ex-Special Forces soldier who is stranded on an uncharted island in Micronesia, searching for journalist Valerie Constantine following an attack by mercenaries. As the story of Far Cry progresses, Jack uncovers the island's true purpose, housing experimentation with genetic modification, resulting in a mutagen being released that turns people into beasts known as Trigens.

Modder Leonj_ is currently working on a total conversion mod for the original Far Cry that will serve as an unofficial sequel titled FarCry Returns, and has released a series of videos on the FarCry Return YouTube channel (via DSOGaming) documenting their progress. Leonj_ has claimed that this sequel will include new mechanics that were featured in later entries of the franchise, such as takedowns and better options for stealth approaches, and will implement a time-of-day and weather system, as well as an addition that is new to
