Monkey D. Luffy is the protagonist of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. Luffy set out on a journey to become the Pirate King in the Great Pirate Era to claim the treasure known as the One Piece left behind by Gol D. Roger. With time, Luffy established a powerful crew and went on to make quite a name for himself. He became the strongest pirate in the East Blue shortly after setting out on his journey and then immediately headed to the Grand Line. In the New World, things have worked out for him pretty similarly and he has, currently, established himself as one of the Four Emperors of the Sea. When it comes to finding the One Piece, Luffy is, without a doubt, the man closest to it, having three of the four Road Poneglyphs. While one would assume that Luffy is extremely close to achieving his dream, that's not entirely the case. In fact, it was recently established that Luffy's dream is not to become the Pirate King at all. Instead, his real dream is something else entirely.
Luffy's dream was established long before he even wanted to become a Pirate King. The very first mention of this came shortly after the Summit War arc. Fans got to witness Luffy's very own flashback where he was seen growing up with Ace and Sabo in the Goa Kingdom. There, the three formed a pretty strong bond of brotherhood. Sabo wanted to become a pirate and pursue freedom. Ace, on the other hand, wanted to surpass everyone and make his name known throughout the whole world, surpassing even the legacy of Gol D. Roger, his father. Luffy, meanwhile, had an entirely different dream.
