While it still lacks an actual sequel, Octopath Traveler fans will soon be able to try out the next best thing: mobile title Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. According to the game’s official Japanese Twitter account, the game is planned for a 2022 release (no exact month has been given yet) and publisher Square Enix will be sharing more information around mid-February, so likely next week. The account adds that fans pay attention to its official Facebook page for further details.
As a reminder, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is a prequel, set before the events of Octopath Traveler in the same land of Osterra. While it features a new cast of playable characters, it’s said that characters from the original game will make an appearance.

Just like the original, it’s a turn-based RPG, although it’s free-to-play and includes in-app purchases and a gacha mechanic to obtain new characters. Also, battles are no longer limited to four party members, with players able to take eight characters into a fight.
Unlike the original, which featured eight different story routes with their own main protagonist, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent has only three. Each one is instead centered around one of the three titular champions, who serve as the main villains: Herminia the Witch of Greed, Titus the Hero, and Argust the Playwright.
It released in Japan in October 2020 for Android and iOS devices and was reportedly very popular, being downloaded 3 million times in only two days.
