Renting short-term access to an RTX 3080 graphics card from Nvidia is now more affordable.
On Thursday, Nvidia’s cloud gaming service, GeForce Now, began letting users pay for a one-month membership to lease access to the GPU, instead of requiring a six-month subscription.
The one-month plan only costs $19.99 as opposed to $99.99 for six month. So it’s a better deal, especially for newcomers who want to try it before investing so much money upfront.
The cloud-gaming service also represents an alternative to owning physical RTX 3080 GPUs, which remain hard to find at affordable prices. GeForce Now gives you access to a company server, which streams purchased games from your Steam or Epic Games library over the internet to your computer or smartphone. The main requirement is a 15Mbps or higher internet connection to ensure the streaming is stable.
We’ve been impressed with the service. But interested users should first make sure the games they want to play are supported through GeForce Now.
The RTX 3080 membership to GeForce Now represents the highest tier to the cloud gaming service, and it allows you to play games at up to a 1440p resolution on a PC.
A step down is the Priority Tier, which costs only $9.99 a month, or $49.99 for six months. However, the games are streamed at up to 1080p by using a "GeForce NOW RTX 2080- or GTX 1080-equivalent GPU" server.
You can also try GeForce Now through the Free Tier, but your cloud-gaming sessions are capped to an hour, forcing you to sign back in. The games are also streamed via a GTX 1060 GPU-equivalent server.
