No Man's Sky has come a long way since its mixed release back in 2016 with a consistent and timely update cycle, but the number of updates given to the game — and the period of time since release — could call the potential for a sequel into question. No Man's Sky has received nearly twenty major updates since release, each update bringing significant additions to the game. It has received not only content updates, adding new questlines and base-building, but also seasonal expeditions that pair with Twitch, enabling exclusive content drops for watching streamers play the game. On top of all of that, Hello Games has also made updates to No Man's Sky's graphics, adding in multiple enhancements over the years to keep the game looking fresh, as well as porting the game to more devices, including VR.
With all of these improvements and additions, a sequel to No Man's Sky seems like it would be on the horizon after six years of post-launch updates. However, Hello Games continues to assure players that No Man's Sky will continue to receive free content updates for the foreseeable future, ensuring the longevity of the game and keeping players engaged and coming back for more. Because of this constant update cycle over such a long period of time, and utilizing gaming partnerships to include things like Mass Effect's Normandy into No Man's Sky, it has never been in a better position to set itself up for a sequel. That said, if Hello Games were to start development on a successor, the amount of content in No Man's Skycould prove to be a challenge for a sequel to overcome.
