Natasha Lyonne, creator of the Netflix series Russian Doll, clarifies the ending of season 1 ahead of the premiere ofseason 2. Russian Doll season 1 follows Nadia (played by Lyonne), a woman trapped in a seemingly never-ending time-loop on her 36th birthday. Understandably frustrated by this scenario, Nadia begins trying to figure out how she will escape this singular day, only to discover that Alan (Charlie Barnett), a man she first encounters in an elevator, is also trapped in a time-loop.
Nadia and Alan team up to try and get both of themselves out of their nightmarish reality, but in Russian Doll season 1, episode 8, yet another wrench is thrown their way. The Nadia who knows about the time-loop ('Alpha Nadia') suddenly is paired up with an Alan who has no knowledge of their time-loop predicament ('Beta Alan'). Similarly, the Alan who knows about the time-loop ('Alpha Alan') meets a Nadia who is clueless it ('Beta Nadia'). Both pairs of Nadias and Alans are followed with a split screen as the Alpha pair help their Beta versions overcome a past hardship. Russian Doll's split screen finally resolves into a singular one after this, with Alpha Nadia and Alpha Alan walking alongside each other in a parade. Although the Alpha pair are reunited, Russian Doll shows two other versions of Nadia walk past her in the opposite direction.
