Hollywood mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer says Johnny Depp's role in future Pirates of the Caribbean movies is still undecided. Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl took audiences and critics by surprise when it was released in the summer of 2003 after many expected the pirate movie based on a Disney theme park movie would be a box office bomb. The film launched a successful franchise that has grossed $4.5 billion worldwide and a large part of that success is due to Depp's performance as the character of Captain Jack Sparrow.
Despite the underperformance of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in 2017, the plan was still to make a sixth film that Depp had hoped would be the final film in the series. Disney reportedly had been collecting documents on many of Depp's unsavory headlines prior so it is unclear how much of the decision was already informed prior. Depp and Heard are currently in the middle of a contentious and heated court case where Depp says Heard's op-ed cost him work including a reported $22.5 million Disney was going to pay him for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.
