launches on Nintendo Switch next week, letting fans compete online to perform speedrunning challenges. Nintendo previewed the upcoming game with a new trailer on Thursday.
Nintendo announced World Championships: NES Edition and its physical Deluxe Edition a few months back. Named for the events held in 1990, 2015, and 2017, it lets players complete 150 challenges from 13 classic NES games. While the full games aren’t included, players can test their skills on challenges from Donkey Kong, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros., Kid Icarus, Kirby’s Adventure, and more.
The developer showcased some of the game’s content in the new trailer. The player can prep for the runs by watching a video showing a sample playthrough. Players can rewind if things go wrong during a challenge. The clock keeps going, though, so do-overs will cost a bit of time. Players can also restart a run instantly if they want to start over with a clean slate, and the game offers what it calls Classified Information for additional tips and tricks.
Once they’ve gotten a handle on the basics, players can move on to the more difficult single-player Legend Challenges. Alternatively, they can jump right into one of the game’s two online modes. The first, World Championships, sees players around the world compete in five weekly ranked challenges. Meanwhile, survival mode has players compete against the ghost data from seven other players. Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition also supports up to eight players in local multiplayer.
