An official spiritual successor to Wii Sports is on the way to the Nintendo Switch via Nintendo Switch Sports. The upcoming Nintendo Switch Sports will revive classic Wii Sports game types, such as tennis and bowling, alongside new modes like badminton. Nintendo fans have been craving something like this since the Nintendo Switch was released and given the success Wii Sports had, it's a bit surprising it took this long. Nintendo released similar party games like 1-2-Switch as launch titles, but they didn't have the staying power of Nintendo's classic sports compilation.
Although games like Mario Golf filled the void for Wii Golf, it's not quite the same. Many players have hoped for a proper sequel or successor to the Wii title for years, but to no avail. Many fell in love with the game because of its simplicity and accessibility. Every Wii system came bundled with Wii Sports, so it gave everyone a free game to play. Not only was it fun, but it was also easy for people who don't normally play games to understand. It was a perfect tech demo that didn't feel watered down and could hold its own against other games on the system. It even spawned a sequel called Wii Sports Resort.

Now, a new trailer from Nintendo confirms the series is returning with Nintendo Switch Sports. The new Nintendo Direct gave players the first look at the game, revealing modes like soccer, bowling, tennis, badminton, volleyball, and chambara. The game will feature local multiplayer and online play with a matchmaking system. It's a perfect mix of old and new and Nintendo is planning a fall update with golf.
