Switch Sports controversially swapped Miis out for a brand-new type of character that's more humanoid and animated, but Nintendo nearly went with burger and bear robots—a huge difference. New photos showing off these bowling hamburgers and robotic skulls with wings have surfaced amidst a dev interview.
"I remember we had the most outlandish characters that looked like robots," producer Takayuki Shimamura said (Thanks, Eurogamer).

"Around the time when we decided to restart the project from scratch and were told that we would be starting over to create the world's most easy-to-invite to motion-based game, I asked, 'Are you sure we can't go this far?'" art director Junji Morii said. "At first, everyone was so excited about this robot idea that we all thought, 'This could be fun!' We even made a prototype. But when we actually saw the robot on the screen and moved it around, a blanket of silence fell over everyone."
Ultimately, the silliness of seeing hamburgers wailing on tennis balls and getting into sword fights became too much, resulting in the more humanoid characters that are more in line with the original Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort. There are still furry characters, mind, so it's not all deadly serious sports antics.
"The player controls the character in the robot to operate the robot," director Yoshikazu Yamashita added. "Then the robot throws the ball. There are too many steps in between."
But robots weren't the only design on the table. There were also college students in jerseys with one even being demonic with giant red horns jutting out of their head. These are more reminiscent of what we did get in the final release.
