Nintendo has come up with a new way to deal with Joy-Con drift in Japan by offering a subscription repair service for Switch owners.
As VGC reports(Opens in a new window), Nintendo is launching a Switch repair service exclusively for Japan called "Wide Care(Opens in a new window)." It costs $1.50 (200 yen) per month or $15 (2,000 yen) per year and covers all models of Switch consoles, Joy-Con controllers, and accessories including the Switch Dock and power adapter.
The Nintendo Wide Care page suggests the subscription is a good idea for parents worried about their child taking the Switch outside, dropping, and breaking it. Alternatively, it's highlighted as a way of easily extending access to official repairs beyond the manufacturer's warranty period.
$15 is cheap when you consider Nintendo is offering up to six repairs per year and that includes accidental damage and water damage. The shipping costs of sending a Switch or any of its accessories to Nintendo for repair are also covered as part of the subscription. And finally, you don't need to worry about covering additional costs as Wide Care includes repairs per year up to a value of $735 (100,000 yen).
Nintendo has previously apologized for the Joy-Con drift problem, but seemingly hasn't managed to come up with a solution to it yet. Perhaps this cheap repair subscription is the solution? And I suspect if Nintendo decided to offer Wide Care outside of Japan, many Switch owners would decide to sign-up simply for the peace of mind their hardware will definitely get fixed and it won't cost a fortune.
