Nintendo released the 3DS in 2011, with the Wii U launching in 2012. The former was met with an overall positive reception and was generally regarded as an upgrade to the earlier Nintendo DS handheld. However, the Wii U's release was more divisive, with reviewers criticizing the console's lack of focus, subpar hardware for an 8th-generation console, and lack of third-party support. Still, the Wii U was also praised for its affordability, backward compatibility, gaming lineup, media features, and lacking subscription fees for its online services. However, both platforms were rendered obsolete by the launch of the hybrid Nintendo Switch in 2017.

Nintendo already announced its plans to discontinue the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShop, ending all sales at 5:00 PM Pacific/8:00 PM Eastern on March 27, 2023. Nintendo will continue to support online play, provide software updates, and allow users to re-download content they already own for the foreseeable future. However, they will not be able to make any new purchases. Anyone who still has money left in their eShop has until March 2024 to merge their eShop and Nintendo Account wallets. Otherwise, they may lose access to their remaining balance.
