Warning: contains spoilers for Nightwing #89!
Kelex, Superman’s version of Alfred Pennyworth, recently paid a call on Nightwing, proven he’s much weirder than Batman’s loyal butler in DC Comics. In Nightwing #89, on sale now in print and digital, Superman’s robot assistant reminds Nightwing of his obligations to both the Man of Steel and Jon Kent—and readers see Kelex is hardly Superman’s “butler” and instead a rich, compelling character of his own.
Superman has left Earth behind, embarking on a quest to liberate WarWorld from Mongul’s clutches. In his absence, his son Jon Kent has stepped up to assume his father’s role. Before he left, however, Superman asked Nightwing to look out for Jon, and be a shoulder for him to lean on. Like many other heroes in the DC Universe, Superman thinks highly of Nightwing, and asking him to look after his son shows the highest level of trust. However, Nightwing has been slack in his duties—through no fault of his own. Using money left to him by Alfred, Nightwing has opened a foundation in the late butler’s honor, designed to address long-standing social issues in Blüdhaven. While it has made him popular with the people, it has put him in the crosshairs of the wrong kind, diverting his attention away from Jon Kent. However, Kelex pops by to remind Nightwing of his duty. The issue, the first installment of “World’s Finest Sons," is written by Tom Taylor, illustrated by Bruno Redondo, colored by Adriano Lucas and lettered by Wes Abbott.
