After the success of Ni No Kuni, the sequel Ni No Kuni 2 had a tough act to follow. It succeeded by introducing new likable characters, an even bigger world to explore, and more activities to keep busy. Of all the new things you can do in the game, one of the most notable is Skirmishes.

There's a larger emphasis on strategy this time around, with mechanics revolving around recruiting military leaders and their soldiers to fight for Evan and his friends. Though many of the Skirmishes are optional, there are times when you'll have to fight through them in order to continue the story.
You'll see glowing banners planted on the ground in the over-world and certain other areas. These highlight Skirmishes that you can undertake. Unlike the RPG battles in the game, Skirmishes are all about moving and directing whatever units you have and clashing with the enemy.
In a vein similar to Pikmin, Evan does not attack, and you give orders to your units rather than control them directly. The goal of each Skirmish is to defeat the forces quickly as possible.
When you decide to do a Skirmish, you'll be taken to the Battle Menu. From there, you can plan your strategy and select your units. You can take several units into battle, so try to have a balance between the different types and Leaders with complementary tactics.
It's also possible to review the enemies you'll be facing, so you can respond accordingly. Lastly, you can spend money beforehand to give your units bonuses such as extra health and stronger attacks. You can also make it more challenging for yourself if you so desire.
During your adventure, you'll meet military leaders with their own forces who will join your quest.
