New Xbox Remix controller is ‘made from old parts, CDs and water jugs’
Microsoft has announced the Xbox wireless controller Remix special edition.
Created to celebrate Earth Day this month, Microsoft says the controller features recovered plastics with one-third of it made from regrind and reclaimed materials.
Launching on April 18 and available to pre-order now for $84.99 / £74.99, the controller is the result of Xbox exploring ways to use less new plastic and reduce waste when creating accessories.
Made partially from old Xbox One controller parts and CDs, it blends various earth-tone colors, features a side grip with a topographic texture pattern, and includes a rechargeable battery pack.
“Mixing post-consumer recycled resins with regrind consisting of previously molded colored parts creates custom, earth-tone colors with subtle variations, swirling, markings, and texturing – giving each Remix Special Edition controller its own look and feel,” Daniel Ruiz, senior marketing manager for Xbox accessories, wrote in a blog post.
“Regrind is the process of mechanically recycling leftover Xbox One generation controller parts into a raw material that can be used to partially create new controllers – while maintaining durability and performance. Post-consumer recycled resins are incorporated from reclaimed materials like automotive headlight covers, plastic water jugs, and CDs.”
Last week Microsoft revealed two new colours for its range of Xbox Elite Series 2 wireless controllers.
Vibrant Red and Blue versions of the controller are now available to pre-order for $139.99 / £124.99, ahead of their launch on April 11.
Like the white model released last September, the new colours are being sold under the full name ‘Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 – Core’.
