The theme song of New Girl was unexpectedly changed halfway through the series’ run, ultimately proving it to be the show’s dumbest decision. As Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) sings, the Fox sitcom’s opening theme sees her and her loft mates playing around with brightly painted set pieces. However, after seventy-seven episodes, the peppy 22-second theme was swapped for a three-second electric-guitar version in season 4, while photos of the cast alternated in between collages. New Girl’s creator, actors, and viewers alike were not too pleased with this change, especially since it affected the show.
The seven-season New Girl follows Jess, a charming and quirky teacher, who moves into a loft with three men, Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield), and Winston (Lamorne Morris). Throughout the show, the storyline has expanded to better include Jess’ best friend Cece, portrayed by Hannah Simone, and former loftmate Coach, played by Damon Wayans, Jr., whose Brooklyn Nine-Nine appearance creates a crossover plot hole. Instead of simply creating punchlines from their experiences, New Girl seeks to depict emotionally driven and realistic characters, as they navigate adulthood and explore their relationships, careers, and personal issues. A major part of this characterization is Jess’ girlishness, which the original New Girl theme song has cleverly encapsulated.
