New Footage of Canceled Half-Life Game Ravenholm Revealed

While the Alyx games have been welcomed by Half-Life fans who have been pining for a new entry in the series, many would prefer to see the continuation of the story featuring the original scientific protagonist Gordon Freeman. As one of the best FPS games of all time, the 2004 sequel, Half-Life 2, took the original Valve title and improved on it. Unfortunately, the mythical Half-Life 3 isn't the only project that is pretty much dead in the water, as some footage from another canceled installment has emerged.

In a video uploaded to the YouTube channel NoClip, the show's host, Danny, has been able to show off an hour of footage from what would have been a new Half-Life game. Called "Ravenholm," this was the work of Arkane Studios, the team behind Dishonored, the reboot of Prey, and Deathloop, and it would have been set in the titular spooky town. The documentary does make it clear that the gameplay being shown was from very early development, so there are numerous placeholders, as well as unoptimized framerates, but it's an exciting look into what could have been.

Footage From Upcoming Half-Life 2 VR Mod Gets Released

It looks like it could have been a successful follow-up to Valve's now classic sequel. It does add some new things to the experience, such as the ability to shove enemies. For those who perhaps are not too familiar with the series, Half-Life 2's abandoned mining town Ravenholm is one of the most memorable levels in the whole franchise. It briefly turned the game into a true horror experience, with some horrifying enemies to boot. Arkane's continuation wouldn't have starred Mr. Freeman, but the footage shows that it would have seen the return of the heroic holy man, Father Grigori.
