Netflix's upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn show will have to break the video-game adaptation curse to strike gold, but its biggest challenge is to embrace one of the key components of the open-world games. The announcement of Netflix's Horizon series is just one in a flurry of popular Playstation titles that are now confirmed to be adapted into different media. HBO's The Last of Us adaptation is finishing shooting, John Wick director Chad Stahelski is attached to the Ghost of Tsushima movie, and in Sony's investors' briefing in May it was revealed that a Grand Turismo show will be developed and that Amazon will create a long-rumored God of War series. Although it's an exciting time for gamers, the Uncharted movie proves that the code to brilliant video-game adaptations is yet to be cracked.
As a series, Horizon has huge potential and in Netflix's hand, it could fulfill that potential. Netflix's acquisition of Horizon Zero Dawn is a continuation of its interest in video game properties after the streaming behemoth produced the critically acclaimed shows Arcane and Castlevania (although both of these were animated shows). The success of the video game adaptations Arcane and Castlevania lends hope to Horizon's chances to do justice to Aloy's story, and the unique vision of post-apocalyptic America that she inhabits. The balance between these two elements could define the show's success.
