From the virtual showfloor of Geeked Week, Netflix has shown off a new trailer for 1899, its upcoming period mystery/sci-fi show from the creators of one of its most peculiar series. Led by Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, creators of Netflix's cult hit, Dark, 1899 is vastly different on the surface, but still retains the creative pair's penchant for unpredictable weirdness, or so it seems judging by this brand-new reveal trailer.
1899 revolves around a steamship of European migrants traveling to New York City at the turn of the 20th century. Naturally, this is not merely an immigrant story, though. As the migrant ship encounters a similar ship adrift at sea, things begin to unravel in a way fans of Dark will likely be on board for--no pun intended.
The trailer depicts the same kind of out-of-context oddities that may hardly make more sense in context if Dark is any indication. The series was first announced in 2018, before Dark had even wrapped up its three-season run on Netflix, and comes as part of a larger deal between the pair and Netflix.
For a deeper dive into 1899's murky waters, Netflix has also shared a behind-the-scenes video. Led by the showrunners, you can get a peek at some of the show's more action-oriented approach, including giant brawls on the ship, bodies being thrown overboard, and raging waters by way of Hollywood green screen. For a series that will be shrouded in mystery probably even once you've watched it and cleared it from your queue, this sneak preview offers up an opportunity to wrap your head around what's to come.
1899 has not yet been given a release date, but it's expected to arrive later in 2022. For more on Netflix Geeked Week, check out a new teaser for Mike Flanagan's The Midnight
