National Treasure: Edge of History producers Cormac and Marianne Wibberley say they’re already brainstorming ideas for season 2. The original National Treasure, which followed Nicolas Cage’s historian and devout hunter of lost valuables, Benjamin Franklin Gates, was a commercial success when it debuted in 2004. Despite never quite reaching the heights of adventure films like Indiana Jones, the film landed with mainstream audiences. In conjunction with 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the franchise has earned over $800 million at the box office. Still, audiences have yet to see Ben Gates search for a third treasure.
Disney+’s upcoming spin-off, Edge of History, passes Gates’ metaphorical torch to a new generation. Picking up 17 years after Book of Secrets, the series follows 20-year-old Jess Morales (Lisette Olivera), who, not unlike Gates, discovers her family’s ties to major historical events and a lost—but not forgotten—treasure. In addition to Olivera, Edge of History’s cast includes Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, Jordan Rodrigues, Jake Austin Walker, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and franchise vets Justin Bartha as Riley Poole and Harvey Keitel as Peter Sandusky.
