It's fair to say that the gaming industry is in something of a remake and remaster boom at the moment. Whether it's fan-made or from the original studio itself, there are a lot of fantastic video game remakes out there, such as Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 2, and even more are on the horizon. One that's just recently come out is The Last of Us Part 1, and there's been something sighted in the background of Naughty Dog's celebrated post-apocalyptic release that wasn't in the original.
According to a screenshot uploaded to Twitter by Naughty Dog Central, an account that chronicles all news related to the developer, there's a brief Easter egg behind Ellie in one of the scenes in The Last of Us. On the wall in the background, just under the top bunk bed, can be seen a poser for Mortal Kombat 2, a game that came out in 1993. The fact that an additional screenshot shows that this nod to the long-running fighting series was not in the 2013 release does raise questions as to why it's been put in for the remake, but it's a neat little find all the same.

The fact that The Last of Us takes place in 2033, and MK2 came out in 1993, could suggest that this is referencing the 40 years that have passed between when the latter was released and when the former was set. But that's speculation. Mortal Kombat is one of the most iconic fighting franchises around, starting life in the early 90s and being partly responsible for video games receiving age ratings by the Entertainment Software Rating Board, or ESRB, due to its depiction of violence The studio choosing to put a small Easter egg to the sequel could simply be the team giving a little nod to this classic entry.
