Clear your Saturday schedule: Sept. 3 is the first National Cinema Day(Opens in a new window), when more than 3,000 US theaters are offering $3 tickets to every movie, at every showtime.
The new holiday, which coincides with Labor Day weekend, launches this year "to celebrate moviegoing" after a rough couple of years for theaters following COVID closures. It also includes tickets for IMAX and Dolby Cinema shows, and discounts on snacks at participating theaters.
"After this summer's record-breaking return to cinemas, we wanted to do something to celebrate," Cinema Foundation President Jackie Brenneman said in a statement(Opens in a new window). "We're doing it by offering a 'thank you' to the moviegoers that made this summer happen, and by offering an extra enticement for those who haven't made it back yet."
As the AP reports(Opens in a new window), Labor Day weekend is usually one of the slowest weekends for movie theaters as patrons soak up one last weekend of summer outdoors. So this event will offer big chains—Regal(Opens in a new window), Cinemark(Opens in a new window), and AMC—as well as indie theaters and drive-ins an opportunity to pull in a little more cash this quarter.
