Mortal Kombat 11 was released back in 2019 and its DLC run is officially over, meaning many are curious about what developer NetherRealm Studios is working on next. There have been a variety of “rumors,” claiming it was a Marvel fighting game and some have hoped it would be Injustice 3. Right now, though, it seems the likeliest candidate is Mortal Kombat 12.
Back in August, it was reported that NetherRealm is working on Mortal Kombat 12 due to uncertainty connected to DC superheroes and issues among AT&T and WB Games. It makes sense, given the context, but now fans might have their most legitimate information yet Mortal Kombat 12 is in development. Recently, a NetherRealm Studios employee posted and quickly removed an image online that references MK12.
Mortal Kombat 11 Developer NetherRealm Can't Announce New Game Because of 'Variables'
Jonathan Andersen is a senior production manager at NRS, and he recently posted a seemingly innocuous photo of his desk covered in Mortal Kombat and Injustice memorabilia. Eagle-eyed fans were able to look closer at the monitors in the image, with the one on the upper right (seen below) containing a file called “MK12 Mast…,” which is an undeniable shortening for the franchise.
Many believe this is some trolling on behalf of NetherRealm, too. Not only is “MK12 Mast…” seen on the monitor, but there are two other aspects. First, it mentions Reptile who was not playable in MK11. Secondly, and most importantly, there’s an email that appears to be a reference to important information that “our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace of…” and says to “take extra care with this material.”
