Very few heroes can get a burn over on Spider-Man, but Moon Knight did just that, and it was far more brutal than fans realize. Spider-Man and the Fist of Khonshu have crossed paths many times over the years, but in 2010’s Vengeance of the Moon Knight #5, they have what might be their most tense encounter to date, in which Moon Knight calls out the Wall Crawler’s inability to get the job done and defeat his greatest foes.
Although Spider-Man and Moon Knight tend to deal with street-level crime, they could not be more different. Spider-Man has a strict moral code, one that prevents him from taking life; he is driven by a deep sense of responsibility, stemming from his failure to save Uncle Ben’s life. Moon Knight, on the other hand, is a brutal anti-hero who does not hesitate to use lethal force. Moon Knight received his powers from the Egyptian god Khonshu and works as his instrument of vengeance on Earth. The two first crossed paths in 1978’s Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #22 (Bill Mantlo and Mike Zeck) Spider-Man fought Moon Knight in that issue, but the two eventually put their differences aside. The two would encounter each other again, and one of their most memorable meetings occurred during the Dark Reign event. Running from 2008 through 2010, Dark Reign saw Spider-Man villain Norman Osborn ascend to the halls of power, using his newfound influence to turn the heat up on not only Spider-Man, but all heroes.
