Ambulance director Michael Bay recounts that one of the most tense days of shooting the film involved having his dog on set near the end of the day. While Bay’s directorial efforts began in the late '90s with action flicks like Armageddon, he’s commonly known for his work on five of the Transformers films. Due to this association, Bay’s brand has become synonymous with flashy CGI and an excessive amount of car chases, shoot-outs and explosions. His newest film, Ambulance, based on a 2005 Danish film of the same name, will likely have all of the above, based on its thrilling premise. The film hits American theaters on April 8 after having made its world premiere in Paris in March.
Ambulance is an action-thriller that follows adoptive siblings, Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who face the full force of the LAPD after they attempt to rob $32 million from a bank. Will reaches out to his career criminal brother Danny in hopes of finding a way to take care of his wife’s medical bills, but both men find themselves in way over their heads. The only way to make their getaway from the bank is in an ambulance currently occupied by an EMT (Eiza González) who’s in the midst of saving the life of an injured officer (Jackson White). Departing from his films with a greater abundance of CGI, Bay even had Gyllenhaal and Abdul-Mateen II do most of the driving in Ambulance.
