The 35th anniversary of the Metal Gear Solidseries is almost here and there are lots of questions about the future of the franchise. Metal Gear Solid is a big name in the industry, yet the departure of series creator Hideo Kojima from Konami has left its future in doubt, especially as Kojima is busy making an Xbox cloud game. Konami has already tried to make Metal Gear Solid games without Kojima and the results weren't great, but it's possible that another studio has been handed the reins of the series.
The Metal Gear series consists of stealth games, where the player must sneak past enemies, and use whatever tools they can find to gain an advantage. The series became the Metal Gear Solid franchise in 1998 when it moved to the original PlayStation and switched to 3D visuals. The Metal Gear Solid franchise became known for its tense gameplay, 4th wall-breaking references, and overly-convoluted plots about government conspiracies. For many fans, the last Metal Gear Solid game was 2015's The Phantom Pain, which launched alongside the internal strife between Konami and Kojima Productions, resulting in Kojima Productions becoming an independent studio. The final Metal Gear game was the potential franchise killer Metal Gear Survivein 2018, though fans could charitably describe Solid Snake's appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the true send-off for the franchise.

The original Metal Gear launched on the MSX in Japan in 1987, while the NES version became available in North America the following year. The 35th anniversary of the Metal Gear franchise will take place on July 13, 2022. It's unclear whether there are any plans for the anniversary
