Emma Thompson's Trunchbull arrives to ruin the day in the first Matilda movie musical trailer. Based on both Roald Dahl's 1988 novel of the same name and its 2010 musical adaptation, the story centers on the titular child prodigy as she is sent to live at a specialized school by her emotionally abusive parents. Matilda finds her new situation just as bad upon learning of the abuse put forth by headmistress Miss Trunchbull and takes comfort in her teacher Miss Honey.
Alisha Weir is leading the cast of Matilda as the titular role alongside Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull, Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee, Lauren Alexandra and Carl Spencer. Development on the musical movie adaption has been in the works for six years, with Netflix acquiring the rights to the project in late 2018 with plans for an animated series while Working Title Films continued work on the film for the streaming platform. Following a mid-2021 production, audiences are getting their first look at what's to come from Matilda.
