The climatic suicide attack on the Collector Base is one of the biggest moments in 2010’s Mass Effect 2, and a new mod makes ensuring that every member of Shepard’s crew makes it out of that final battle all the more difficult. In the second installment of BioWare’s beloved sci-fi RPG trilogy, Commander Shepard is revived and recruited by the terrorist group Cerberus to help neutralize a new threat targeting human colonies. To take down these Reaper-backed foes, Shepard has to build a new team of morally-ambiguous allies to lead a high-risk assault on the Collectors’ main stronghold — which is hidden beyond the mysterious Omega 4 Relay.
From the beginning of Mass Effect 2, it is stated that this planned attack is perilous and that not everyone will survive the journey through the Omega 4 Relay — including Commander Shepard. The looming danger of the final mission ties into Mass Effect 2’s gameplay, with Shepard needing to upgrade the new Normandy and earn the trust of each new squamate by completing Loyalty Missions. Even if the Normandy crew is fully behind Shepard when they venture off toward the Omega 4 Relay for their final attack against the Collectors, Shepard can still lose certain squadmates if players assign them to unfitting tasks during the mission. While this all may seem daunting, players who are aware of the mechanics behind Mass Effect 2's climatic suicide mission have found it quite easy to ensure that everyone lives — and it can be argued that the non-canon ending in which Shepard is sacrificed to save the Milky Way Galaxy from the Collectors is actually harder to achieve than the one where they live to fight another day.
