An eagle-eyed Marvel’s Spider-Man fan recently uncovered a surprising little detail involving Taskmaster’s side challenges: that the masked mercenary can be found spying on Spidey as the hero completes his tests. Players battle several villains during Insomniac’s hit superhero open-world action title, from classic foes like Doc Ock and the Kingpin to more contemporary baddies like Mister Negative and the social media-obsessed Screwball. Among this diverse rouge’s gallery is Taskmaster, a skull mask-wearing assassin who has also made a gaming appearance in 2020’s Marvel’s Avengers — though these two titles are set in separate continuities. In the comics, Tony Masters is a former S.H.I.E.L.D agent who possesses a photographic memory and reflexes — which he uses to study the moves and abilities of various superheroes and replicate them in battle.
This is what leads Taskmaster to New York City during the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man, as one of the game’s many side quests has Spidey tracking down mysterious terminals that the villain has set up around the city and completing the challenges contained within them — all as part of a bid to recruit the wall-crawler for the secret organization Taskmaster is working for. After Spidey completes a certain amount of these side activities, Taskmaster himself emerges to test his newly-acquired skills against the web-slinger in a boss battle. While Taskmaster can be a formidable foe, some Marvel’s Spider-Man players have come up with ways to take him down easily using Spider-Man’s Blitz Suit Power.
