In the Marvel Universe, the Avengers are considered the top tier superhero team. But as different factions of the group start to rise, the name has become a little watered down, apparent in the Savage Avengers team.
The new Savage Avengers series has kicked off with an all-new lineup. With Conan the Barbarian currently time displaced in the standard Marvel Universe, the cyborg assassin Deathlok has honed in on him as a target. When Deathlok strikes, Daredevil and Anti-Venom get involved while the Hulk-Wolverine hybrid Weapon H and Black Knight are in the midst of their own scuffle with Cloak and Dagger nearby. This chaotic mess eventually transports the group to Conan's world, which is called the Hyborian Age. And despite the period's primitive setting, the heroes still face unbelievable dangers that threaten them all.

What's strange about these events, which takes place in Savage Avengers #2 by David Pepose and Carlos Magno, is that the Savage Avengers are christened as «Avengers» from the start. It's unusual to declare this team «Avengers» so early in their adventure together. It begs the question as to what it actually means to be an «Avenger» within the Marvel Universe. During the story, none of the heroes are actually working in their capacity as Avengers. Some of them have actually never been Avengers before. And those who have, were part of auxiliary Avengers teams or were merely «Avengers» by association.
