Mario Strikers: Battle League is finally adding the much-asked-for Princess Daisy in its first free DLC update — but some fans feel she should have been in from the start. Last month, Nintendo and developer Next Level Games released the third and latest installment of the soccer-based Mario Strikers series on the Nintendo Switch, with Mario and his friends leading their own soccer teams to challenge each other in intense and colorful match-ups filled with power-ups and other antics. Players can compete in either single-player or online, and Mario Strikers: Battle League builds on the foundation of its two predecessors with a new “Hyper Strike” attack that awards two points for a single goal.
Mario Strikers: Battle League launched with 10 playable characters, a roster much smaller than those of past Mario Strikers titles. Many fans felt that a few of the most popular figures in the Super Mario franchise were missing from this limited release line-up — namely the tomboyish Princess Daisy who has been a regular mainstay of Mario sports titles as far back as 2003’s Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. This perceived lack of content has led to mixed reviews for Mario Strikers: Battle League, but Nintendo has assured players that the game’s roster will be expanded by way of free post-launch Mario Strikers: Battle League DLC updates, and a recent leak hinted that the game could have twice as many playable characters after all is said and done.
