Throughout the start of 2022, multiple leakers claimed that Nintendo had started development on Mario Kart 9 for the Switch. Naturally, that drove Mario Kart fans to watch the February 2022 Nintendo Direct in the hopes of a proper reveal for the game, and while fans did get Mario Kart news, it wasn't quite what fans expected. Instead of a new game, Nintendo announced the Booster Course Pass DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which will add 48 previous racetracks to the game over the course of 2022 and 2023. It's certainly a robust expansion, but considering how long it's been since Nintendo released a new Mario Kart game, it wasn't exactly what fans were hoping for either.
It's worth noting, however, that the Booster Course Pass doesn't necessarily negate the existence of Mario Kart 9. It's entirely possible that Nintendo is developing a new Mario Kart game alongside the ambitious Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC. However, the DLC could shed light on Nintendo's release plans for Mario Kart 9. If the company plans to keep Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the spotlight for the next two years, then Mario Kart 9 might be intended as one of the Switch's last major games, bridging the gap between the highly successful Switch and Nintendo's next console.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass Should Include More Characters
The Booster Course Pass came as a disappointment to many because it refuted hopes that Mario Kart 9 would release soon. Nintendo has no reason to release a new Mario Kart game while it's working on a long-term DLC for the current game. Releasing Mario Kart 9 in 2022 or even 2023 could actively turn fans away from the DLC as they choose to buy the new game instead of investing in an expansion, so it's better to let the DLC be Mario
