Giancarlo Esposito, who will reprise his role as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian season 3, claims the show is making its Disney+ return this summer. The Mandalorian dropped its season 2 finale, “Chapter 16: The Rescue,” on December 18, 2020. In the episode, Djarin defeated Gideon, lay claim to the Darksaber, and bid adieu to Grogu (aka Baby Yoda) before sending him off to train with Luke Skywalker. While audiences thought that would be the last they saw of the eponymous character untilThe Mandalorian season 3, the bounty hunter and his foundling made a surprise appearance in another Star Wars spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett.
The Book of Boba Fett picked up with Din sometime after the events of The Mandalorian season 2 as he reunited with the remaining members of his Mandalorian covert. The series saw Din train with the Darksaber, banished from his tribe for removing his helmet, procure an N-1 Starfighter to replace the Razor Crest, and reunite with Grogu — who chose to be with his adopted father rather than follow the path of a Jedi. Ironically, some of The Book of Boba Fett’s best moments came courtesy of The Mandalorian, which has only exacerbated anticipation for its season 3. That said, The Mandalorian season 3 started filming in September 2021 and reportedly wrapped filming in March 2022.
