It’s a little hard to believe, but there was a time when Nippon Ichi’s cult-classic series of JRPGs, Disgaea, was confined to a single game surrounded by other efforts on the developers’ part. After the original Disgaea came out, Phantom Brave was deemed its “spiritual sequel.” And before Disgaea 2 entered the gaming sphere, a little thing called Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome expanded the creators’ strategy RPG aspirations even further.

These days, Disgaea has six mainline installments (and a plethora of remasters) under its belt. It’s hardly in the same commercial league as your Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts, but its somewhat niche fandom is hardcore enough to show up every time. Seeking to expand access to forgotten spinoffs like Makai Kingdom, Nippon Ichi has been relaunching various games via the ‘Prinny Presents’ label. Enter Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed And Rebound.
Makai Kingdom: Reclaimed and Rebound is in some ways new, in others old, and in no ways very old. It's technically a modern port of a Japan-only PSP re-release from 2011, so folks over on that side of the pond can celebrate a smooth graphical overhaul and… not much else, really. But here in the West, that PSP content never did arrive. That means fans new and old are in for a feast by comparison.
To reiterate, then, 2005's PS2 version was, until now, the only official way for Westerns to enjoy this game. Six years later in 2011, Japanese fans were in for a treat with a neatly-enhanced PSP purchase. Along comes 2022, and the rest of us can finally play catch-up.
