You don't have to be an avid reader of the IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog comic run to know about Tangle and Whisper. These two characters created for the comics have been shipped together for years - so much so that we've long known that there are shippers among the IDW team itself. However, Whispangle might be even more popular than we thought, with Sonic comics and Frontiers writer Ian Flynn confirming that there are a bunch of fans behind the scenes.
Speaking about Sonic shipping over on Twitter, Flynn confirms that "the majority" of creatives working on the comics assume Tangle and Whisper are lesbians - himself included. While stressing that this doesn't mean that they're canonically gay, it does show that those who write the stories want them to be, or at least personally believe that they're queer. It's not clear why the ship hasn't been made canon yet, but Flynn says he doesn't have the power to make it happen, implying it's all in Sega's hands.

"Tangle and Whisper aren't officially lesbian[s]," says Flynn, speaking on Twitter about how Sonic writers feel about shipping. "The majority of the fandom and creatives assume they are, myself included."
However, he then goes on to explain why he doesn't outright say Tangle and Whisper are gay: "I can't. [And] I don't want folks disappointed if something changes down the line."
While shippers will be excited to hear that so many of the creatives that work on the comics agree that Tangle and Whisper would be great together, Flynn's wording here suggests that they won't be made canon anytime soon.
