Marvel's Luke Cage will lose his «Hero for Hire» title when he exchanges it for "Mayor for Hire" in the very near future — but he might have a problem gaining the trust of New York City after the company's latest crossover event. The Devil's Reign event has transformed the city forever, thanks to the actions of the Kingpin and his disastrous policies as Mayor of New York City. As of Devil's Reign #6, the Kingpin and Luke Cage's fortunes have drastically changed, but Cage will have to work overtime to win back the people of the Big Apple.
During the Devil's Reign story event, the Kingpin used his powers as Mayor of New York City to outlaw all superhero activity within the city limits. This led to the government-appointed Thunderbolts to apprehend numerous superheroes, all to the crowd's adoration. Unfortunately, the Kingpin was influencing everyone thanks to the harnessed power of the Purple Man; his ability to persuade anyone to do nearly anything proved invaluable to a power-hungry man like Wilson Fisk.

In an attempt to rob Wilson Fisk of his power, the remaining Avengers decide he must be removed from office — and Tony Stark decides to run for Mayor. Luke Cage and the other Avengers disagree — they believe Cage should run for Mayor instead; Cage is known in the city as a street-level hero who's helped countless others, while Stark is a billionaire who lives in penthouses and is thus not the most relatable candidate, especially when going up against Fisk as mayor.
