Amazon's first trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power contains a shot of a man cloaked in fire, but who is he? First released on February 13th, 2022, via a shiny Super Bowl commercial, The Rings of Power teaser trailer sets up events across Middle Earth's Second Age through 19 sweeping, action-filled shots. Among these is Markella Kavenagh's Harfoot girl reaching out to a figure at the center of a fiery maelstrom, leading The Lord of the Rings audiences to speculate on who this mysterious man might be.
The Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have stated (via Vanity Fair) that the Amazon series will look "to tell one story that unites all" of the Second Age's big events. While condensing the Second Age's expansive 2,500-year narrative will likely result in cuts to J.R.R. Tolkien's original The Silmarillion material that The Rings of Power is based on, it will also allow the series' primary characters to come to the fore much quicker. Some familiar faces such as Morfydd Clark's Galadriel and Robert Aramayo's Elrond feature prominently in the trailer, while other anticipated characters, such as Sauron and Gandalf, remain unseen for now.
