Hollywood giant Lionsgate has revealed it’s in discussions to greenlight “a big AAA game” based on the John Wick franchise.
John Wick is a trilogy of critically and commercially successful action movies starring Keanu Reeves as a retired assassin out for revenge. A fourth instalment is set to release in March 2023.
During a recent earnings call with investors (transcribed byIndiewire), Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer claimed that execs were looking to expand on the series’ movie success with a large video game project, and claimed they have already been “fielding proposals”.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself here, but we believe there is a big AAA game to be made out of John Wick,” he said. “We have been fielding proposals. We certainly are interested in moving that forward, but I don’t want to say anything more about that at this time.”
In addition to Chapter 4, a John Wick spin-off movie starring Ana de Armas is due to start production next week. Additionally, a prequel series “The Continental” will be available to stream exclusively on Amazon Prime Video internationally.
One John Wick video game has already been released in 2020’s John Wick Hex, an indie game by designer Mike Bithell featuring strategy-style gameplay.
Key figures behind the John Wick films appear to be fans of video games. Director Chad Stahelski is currently helming the Ghost of Tsushima film, while the writer behind the franchise was reportedly at one point adapting Just Cause for the big screen.
