The penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 foreshadowed the series' ending, as the time-traveling heroes were offered a brief glimpse of their potential fates should they retire from heroism. With the series not yet renewed for season 8 and many other Arrowverse series having come to a close, there has been some speculation that the upcoming season 7 finale could be the final curtain for the long-running superhero show. However, it is just as likely that the various futures the Legends were shown were part of a scheme by the Evil Gideon AI that has sought their destruction throughout the last year.
The plot of Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, «Too Legit To Quit,» found the Legends achieving a stalemate with the Evil Gideon after she learned of the existence of Legend of Tomorrow's human Gideon created earlier in the season. With her programming forbidding her from self-destructing (even when the self in question was a copy of her programming magically conjured into a human body), Evil Gideon was forced to spare the Legends. This led the human Gideon to negotiate a deal that would save her friends' lives while allowing the Evil Gideon AI to continue her mission of bringing order to the timeline.

The human Gideon persuaded the Evil Gideon to return the Legends to their proper places in time, in exchange for taking on the role of Time Master that Evil Gideon's core mission required.
