Nintendo is facing a double dose of very bad news this week after physical copies of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 have been sold early(Opens in a new window), but someone also managed to leak a ROM of the entire game.
The inevitable end result of such a leak is lots of game spoilers starting to be shared on the internet, but much worse for Nintendo is the fact the illegal ROM version of the game runs on PC. And as Eurogamer reports(Opens in a new window), it didn't take long to get it up and running(Opens in a new window) on Valve's Steam Deck handheld.
While most fans of the series will now be attempting to avoid spoilers while waiting for the game to ship for the Switch on July 29, Nintendo will no doubt scramble to try and locate and remove all copies of the ROM from download sites. That's easier said than done, but it won't stop Nintendo trying and the Japanese company is known for taking legal action if it can.
Xenoblade Chronicles is a very important series for Nintendo, with the Definitive Edition of the first game selling over 1.5 million copies on Switch. The second game sold 2.17 million, and the third game is expected to mirror that success and act as a summer hit and system seller for Nintendo. That's likely still to happen, but the news headlines will be about this leak rather than the game's planned marketing campaign.
