Now that Microsoft has stated there will only be one new feature update to both Windows 11 and Windows 10 per year, the previous naming conventions don’t fit anymore, such as 22H2 (for 2022 second half) or November 2022 update.
An astute user in the Windows Insider beta testing program noticed a simpler naming convention in the setup pages for the next major update to Windows 11. The user, who goes by the name Xeno, posted the following tweet:
The screenshot suggests the name will be Windows 11 2022 Update.
As Windows fan site Neowin(Opens in a new window) notes, the simplified version name could just be a placeholder; preview builds are notorious for including features and details that don't make it into the final release version. And as Xeno noted in a follow-up tweet(Opens in a new window), "'Windows 11 2022 Update' is no longer shown for me."
But it would certainly make sense as a new naming convention, given the change to annual feature updates. And we're less than a month away from the version's launch.
The next major Windows 11 update is expected to arrive on Sept. 20. The update doesn't have any huge changes for the operating system; those all came with the launch of Windows 11 last fall. It will include some welcome tweaks, however, such as folders for the Start menu and drag and drop for the Taskbar.
Beyond the Windows 11 2022 Update, Microsoft is reportedly returning to its old scheme of one major Windows release every three years and new features in the interim, which could mean Windows 12 is on the horizon for 2024.
