The Las Vegas City Council this week unanimously approved a request from Elon Musk's Boring Company to extend the company's underground tunnels into downtown Las Vegas.

When Musk revealed plans in 2016 to start a “boring company” to tackle excess traffic, many thought he was just making a bad joke or pun. But by 2018, the Boring Company got approval for a test track in Hawthorne, California, near SpaceX headquarters, and a 29-mile loop was approved for Las Vegas three years later.
This week, the Las Vegas City Council said the Boring Company can extend that tunnel to 34+ miles and 55+ stops. It’ll eventually reach Harry Reid Airport and Allegiant Stadium, but the first phase of the expansion will include stops at the Fremont Street Experience, the Plaza Hotel Casino, Circa Las Vegas, and the STRAT Las Vegas, the city tweeted(Opens in a new window). This section of the loop will be privately funded, according to the city. If a casino or hotel wants to connect to it, they'll have to fund it themselves, according to(Opens in a new window) NBC's KSNV in Las Vegas.
"Thanks to the entire team at the City of Las Vegas!" The Boring Company tweeted(Opens in a new window). “TBC is excited to build a safe, convenient, and awesome transportation system in the City.”
First opened to the public at CES 2021, the Vegas loop currently circles the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) with a fleet of Tesla Model Xs and Ys covering a distance of 1.7 miles. The Boring Company advertises a two-minute travel time from one end of the LVCC to the other, though when we tried it out at CES 2022, the fastest ride we measured took 3:05 minutes.
