The 20th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series is fast approaching and Square Enix has promised to celebrate the occasion with new merchandise. Kingdom Hearts' creator hinted that a new game will also be announced for the 20th anniversary of the franchise. Additionally, a certain leak suggests that the next mainline entry is already in development.
Kingdom Hearts is an action RPG series set in a universe where the worlds from numerous Disney franchises exist in close proximity to each other. The story follows three kids named Sora, Riku, and Kairi, who leave their homeworld of the Destiny Islands in search of adventure. Sora is granted the ability to wield a Keyblade and joins Goofy and Donald Duck on a journey to protect the Disney worlds from the mysterious creatures known as the Heartless. That's about as basic a summary of the Kingdom Hearts story as possible, as it soon descends into a bundle of plotlines and characters, told across different mainline and side games.

2022 has a number of anniversaries, several of which belong to Square Enix, as the Final Fantasy franchise is celebrating its 35th anniversary, while FF7 is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Kingdom Hearts will be celebrating its 20th anniversary on March 28, 2022. Those old enough to remember when the game first came out may think that sounds early, but that's because it didn't launch in North America until September and Europe in November of 2002. Square Enix has its hands full with Final Fantasy anniversaries, but that doesn't mean that Sora and his friends have been forgotten.
