Square Enix is partnering up with Bandai to produce a pair of handheld Tamagotchi to commemorate Kingdom Hearts’ 20th anniversary. Two decades ago to this day, the original Kingdom Hearts combined characters from Final Fantasy and worlds from Disney's list of classic animated films to create a surprisingly gripping JRPG experience in its own right. Players would be introduced to characters like Sora, Kairi, Rikku, and many others as they crossed paths with cartoon icons like Mikey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy and battled to save the universe from the forces of darkness.
After the first Kingdom Hearts captivated PlayStation 2 gamers in 2002, the series spawned several sequels and spin-offs across multiple platforms, as well as toys and tie-in media like novels and manga. The storyline of the first three mainline Kingdom Hearts titles and all surrounding games would culminate in 2019’s Kingdom Hearts 3, but that hasn’t stopped Square Enix and Disney from continuing the franchise thanks to side stories like the mobile-based Kingdom Hearts Union X – though there is still no official news yet of a possible Kingdom Hearts 4. Additionally, Sora joined the ranks of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the game’s final guest DLC character last fall, cementing Kingdom Hearts’ place among the greatest video game franchises of all time.
