Kingdom Hearts Dark Road has had an interesting lifespan since its announcement. The mobile game, created by the same team behind Kingdom Hearts Union X [Cross], was shrouded in mystery for a short time, announced shortly after the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind under the codename “Project Xehanort.”
The project was official unveiled to be a new prequel in the series, telling the story of a young Xehanort and Eraqus still in their apprentice years as Keyblade wielders in Scala ad Caelum. The game is meant to lay a lot of new groundwork for the already confusing story of Kingdom Hearts going forward, while finally answering lots of long-standing questions fans have had about the series' longest-running antagonist.

It was upsetting for fans when it was announced that Kingdom Hearts Union X [Cross] would be ending online service, relegating the mobile title to an offline compendium for story cutscenes. At the same time, it was announced that Dark Road, an extension of the Union X [Cross] mobile app, would also be entering an offline state shortly after alongside one final story update. However, it seems that fans will have to wait a little longer before the update arrives.
On the official Japan Twitter for Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, Square Enix announced that the final story update for Dark Road would be delayed to an unspecified date. Originally, the update was meant to launch sometime in the winter, but the team has stated that it will take little longer due to the final update having a significant addition of story content.
While it is unfortunate that fans will have to wait to see how the story concludes, it’s exciting to know that there is a great deal of story
