If you’re a fan of One Piece, there’s bad news: A hack at Toei Animation is delaying the broadcast of the show and several other anime series from the studio.
On Friday, Toei posted a notice, saying it had to postpone the anime programs due to an illegal intrusion into the studio’s IT network on March 6.
The hack forced Toei to suspend its internal systems. “Details are currently under investigation, but it has been revealed that it will affect the airing schedule of our TV animations ‘Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken,’ ‘Delicious Party ♡ Pretty Cure,’ ‘Digimon Ghost Game,’ and ‘One Piece.’”
Toei first reported the hack on Monday, saying an unnamed third party has breached the anime studio’s internal network. It remains unclear if any customer or business partner data was stolen in the hack. For now, Toei has only said it’s taken security measures to shut down the animation studio’s internal computers and bar network access to them.
In a separate notice, the official One-Piece.com website added the hack has “hindered” production and the broadcast of the anime series. The site plans on notifying fans about the new broadcast schedule on March 20.
We’ve reached out to Toei for more information, and we’ll update the story if we hear back. But it’s possible the anime studio is trying to recover from a ransomware attack, which can shut down an entire IT network by encrypting the affected computers. In addition, the hackers behind ransomware incidents can often steal data from their victim’s computers before encrypting them, which paves the way for them to hold the information hostage in exchange for funds.
