Kevin Feige And Patty Jenkins' Star Wars Movies Shelved, But Not Taika Waititi's - Report
Movies previously on track for the Star Wars universe from Marvel boss Kevin Feige and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins are no longer in active development, according to a new report by Variety.
In Variety's analysis, unnamed sources with knowledge of both productions say that the surprise success of underdog Mandlorian, and it outpacing expectations for The Rise of Skywalker has led to a change in strategy for the franchise. Jenkins' Rogue Squadron was scheduled to come out in December 2023, until it was pulled from Lucasfilm's release schedule last September with little explanation. Feige's Star Wars feature was still untitled, and not much was known about the project.
Despite the shake-ups, Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie--first revealed back in 2020--is reportedly still on track. In addition to directing, Waititi will also act in the movie, which he told GamesRadar in 2022 will expand the Star Wars universe.
«I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah, that's Chewbacca's grandmother,'» Waititi said. «That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story.»
Another Star Wars movie, from director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness) and writers Damon Lindelof (Watchmen) and Justin Britt-Gibson (Counterpart) may also still be on the way, though there's no official update yet either way.
Disney has an untitled Star Wars film for release on December 19, 2025.
