Based on the Elmore Leonard short story “Fire in the Hole”, Justified saw Raylan transferred from Miami to his native Kentucky as punishment for a public shooting. Over six seasons, Raylan struggled to reignite his relationship with ex-wife Winona (Natalie Zea) and came into conflict with old friend-turned-criminal Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). In the Justified series finale, Raylan finally escaped Harlan, but his future is uncertain.

The Emmy-nominated Olyphant will headline Justified: City Primeval, a sequel based on the Elmore Leonard novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit. Set eight years after the Justified finale, the main action will reportedly move to a new city as Raylan crosses paths with Clement Mansell, “The Oklahoma Wildman”, and his lawyer, Carolyn Wilder. The limited series initially follows on from where Justified ended in Miami, but the original's cast and crew have teased what could have happened to Raylan Givens in the intervening years, including his love life and a possible career beyond law enforcement.
